Great to hear you're getting out from behind the computer. I'm a big fan of both Detroit Nation and Detroit Synergy. Keep writing. Keep sharing. Keep giving. Together, we'll create a better Detroit.

You can view a 10 minute clip of "Combating Apathy in an UnSocial Detroit" from #140conf Detroit on BlipTV:

I very much agree with what you have said. I can speak from the school perspective and can see the decline in the Detroit Public Schools over the past 30 years, that I have been watching. I can see the decline in other large cities in the school systems as well, they will follow what DPS has gone through. They have a chance to change but there are so many factors that are holding things in a status quo. The thinking that "we have always done it this way and it worked back then" philosophy need to be gone. We are teaching kids to BE things we have never dealt with and therefore we need to teach them in a way we have never taught before. Just think; globalization of learning, changing portrait in America (races and bi-races), computer learning, just to name a few. C'mon people of Michigan, let's open up our minds to a whole new world. If we don't we will continue to be stuck in the quagmire of outdated education.

Hmm that was weird, my comment got eaten. Anyway I wanted to say that it's nice to know that someone else also mentioned this as I had trouble finding the same info elsewhere. This was the first place that told me the answer. Thanks.

Hey, neighbor! (yup, I'm in RO, too)

Some good choices here. The Sleeping Bear Dunes area is a particular favorite with us, and Ann Arbor is a favorite day-trip destination (great restaurants, walkable downtown, and plenty of parks). This year, we've also spent some time in the Thumb in a cottage along Lake Huron, a weekend at a beautiful B&B in Kalamazoo (where, yup, I sampled some Bell's), and a couple of days photographing the cool sights during Grand Rapids' Art Prize competition.

I think one of the things I like best about Michigan is the change in the seasons. I'm so glad we're finally getting a wee bit of snow in the Detroit area this year!
