Jeff Bocan

I came across this article on the Huffingtonpost.com by Jeff Bocan “Five One-Way Tickets to Michigan, Please“  The kind of forward thought that Jeff Bocan has it what makes great businessman.  He has taken the path less taken in this decision to move his family from California to Michigan.  He could have stayed in California, and continued to invest in high tech computer companies, and done extremely well.  This is the kind of decision that instead of making hundreds of millions of dollars, take a company to make billions of dollars.  Jeff Bocan’s premise for looking for investing in Michigan is pretty simple.
“Knowledge-based and high-growth sectors like clean tech, life sciences and health care are perfectly suited for Michigan’s deep engineering, research and advance manufacturing base (a welcome legacy of the automotive industry), not to mention the ample natural resources of the state, notably fresh water, wind currents, vast forests and agricultural lands – valuable assets for a “greening” U.S. and global economy.”

Another point that Jeff Bocan brings up in his article is that in the past 50 years it really took a lot for someone in Michigan to look to start their own company, when  a comfortable life was so easy to obtain, with the great pay of the assembly line, and abundant jobs with the auto companies and their suppliers.  Now that this industry is not as strong the spirit can start to grow again, and Jeff Bocan believes that it will.
“Some of America’s historically most successful companies were created by Michigan entrepreneurs. Everyone knows about Henry Ford and the great run many Detroit businesses had with the auto industry, but Michigan spawned other global success stories as well, such as Dow Chemical, Kellogg’s and Whirlpool.”

Michigan has built some of the best companies in the world in the past, I believe that in the future Michigan will again build companies that will not only make this country better, but the world.  It will take people like Jeff Bocan to lead the way, and I applaud his business savvy and guts to purchase five one-way tickets to Michigan.
